Letter from Akiva Kohane, Director of American Joint Distribution Committee Office (JDC) in Poland in December 1969 to Headquarters in New York

GENEVA, 19th December, 1969

Movement from Poland

I have received information that the Polish authorities have effected a change in one aspect of the procedures in connection with emigration of Jews from Poland, namely till now, every one who wanted to leave the country, had to sign a document stating that he is renouncing to Polish citizenship.

Now, the applicant has to state that he is doing it voluntarily. As a reason for his renouncing to Polish citizenship and intention of leaving the country, he must choose one of the following answers:

  1. He wants to go to Israel,
  2. He is a Zionist,
  3. He is Jewish.
